Military Lab Rats - by Oliver North

No nation has ever had a better military than today’s, all-volunteer, U.S. Armed Forces. Though I wouldn’t trade anything for the young Americans I served with in Vietnam, or afterwards, those presently wearing America’s uniforms are the brightest, best educated, best trained, and combat-experienced military the world has ever seen. Now, in the midst of an unprecedented ninth year of war and non-stop, high-stress deployments, their Commander-in-Chief intends to put the capabilities of this extraordinary force and our nation’s security at risk to carry out a radical social experiment.

During his presidential campaign, Mr. Obama frequently promised he would reverse the U.S. military’s long-standing “policy” prohibiting homosexuals from serving in our military. Last October, at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, he said “I'm working with the Pentagon, its leadership and the members of the House and Senate on ending this policy…I will end ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell.’ That's my commitment to you."

Last week, tucked into the closing paragraphs of his State of the Union address, the president said, “this year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are.” Set aside the disingenuous rhetoric -- it’s not about “who they are,” it’s really about “what they do” -- we now know the “repeal” process is already well underway.

This week, Senator Carl Levin, (D-MI), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee -- an advocate of ending what he calls, “this discriminatory policy” -- convened a remarkable hearing to determine “next steps” in “meeting the president’s commitment.”

Testimony by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed the Department of Defense isn’t going to evaluate whether repeal of Section 654, Title 10 U.S. Code -- the 1993 statute that bars active homosexuals from the military -- is a good idea. Instead, the Pentagon is already working to undermine the law and allow practicing homosexuals to enter and remain in our military.

According Mr. Gates, “The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we best prepare for it.” He announced a year-long “study” on how to implement a repeal of the law and baldly asserted, “we have a degree of latitude within the existing law to change our internal procedures in a manner that is more appropriate and fair to our men and women in uniform.” In other words, in the Obama administration, enforcing current law, overwhelmingly enacted seventeen years ago, no longer matters.

Mr. Gates now acknowledges in the midst of war, he is implementing a policy of “selective enforcement” to disregard a law that clearly states: “The presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability.” So much for our national security.

Though Admiral Mullen expressed his “personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do,” he conceded he does not “know for a fact how we would best make such a major policy change in a time of two wars.” The Joint Chiefs Chairman also made the curious observation, “we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.” How that can be the case in a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era seems to have eluded the good Senators.

Unasked and unanswered are “where do we go from here” questions the Senators should have posed: If Congress changes the law and allows overt, practicing homosexuals in the ranks, should NAMBLA members be allowed to serve? Will those who advocate abolishing “age of consent” laws be allowed to don a uniform? Will the military have to acknowledge “same sex marriages?” Will military chaplains be required to perform such rituals? Will “same-sex couples” be entitled to military housing? Will these “couples” be allowed to serve in the same unit or aboard the same ship?

Supposedly these issues and many more will be resolved over the next ten months in a “working group” headed by Pentagon General Counsel Jeh Johnson and General Carter Ham, Commander, U.S. Army, Europe. Allegedly they will consider ways to ameliorate the effects of this inane decision on readiness, recruitment and retention in the world’s finest military. Then, in 2011, Congress will vote on whether to repeal a law the O-Team is willfully ignoring anyway.

Congress should not wait to decide this issue and become party to potentially irreparable damage to our military. Congress controls the purse strings of the Pentagon. Both houses should go on record now so “We The People” know who favors treating America’s Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen, and Marines like lab rats in Mr. Obama’s radical social experiment.

Tony?
Hi Tony,

I was just wondering how I should interpret your silence? A thoughtful pause? Tacit agreement? Or have you simply run out of insults?

Hi Tony,
If someone commits a crime but gets away with it (doesn't get convicted) are they not a criminal? Or, lets put it another way... if you're wrongfully convicted of a crime you didn't commit... are you a criminal? Maybe in the eyes of the court... but in reality? Or here's an even simpler one... If you're lied to, but don't realize it.... isn't the other person still lying?

Oliver North admitted his role in the Iran Contra Scandal and only escaped conviction because his own damning testimony was made very publicly and that he was promised immunity in exchange for that same testimony.

But lets be clear. I don't think Oliver North should be silenced. I simply think that news organizations should not go out of their way to make his opinions seem relevant and credible by circumventing the truth. His list of credits, as written here, make him sound like a military angel with an eye for history.. when he is anything but. That's not news... that's not even a respectable way to handle an opinion page... that's propaganda. Print his opinion. But even on an opinion page.. it should come with either a fair and balanced disclosure of who this person is... or none at all.

Don't you think it's a little disingenuous for news organizations to offer up articles from this man as if he's some sort of standard-bearer for morality by carefully omitting the amazing stain the Iran-Contra scandal left on his career and his "honor?" That scandal is what made him (in)famous in the first place... it's that notoriety that, once tempered by the fog of time, gave rise to his other media successes.

What a hypocrite you are! You call yourself a 'true' conservative and Republican. If you really were all of THAT you would not refer to Mr. North as a criminal since he was never convicted of anything in a court of law. I love your smug 'better-than-you' attitude. You are one of those that is always right and the rest of the world has their head in the sand. If everyone has something to offer (as you said below)...then why did you feel the need to write a letter to the editor of this paper to complain? People must want to hear what Oliver North has to say or he wouldn't have a column that is in demand. I also know that Oliver North is in demand on the lecture circuit. Wow, people really do respect what this 'criminal' has to say. It is obvious that he has made some mistakes...Like we ALL have. That does not mean he does not have something to offer our society. Many have wanted him to run for President. You last letter made me laugh out loud. You wrote a lot...but really said little. On the outside it looks nifty, but when you examine closer, it is mostly full of hot air. And you are right I am NOT true Republican because I do not vote straight ticket. I vote for the best guy for the job!! I vote for the person that I feel will be the best to represent my values in office. Yes, too much government is not good...but I'd rather have too much good government than too much of what we have now, which are politicians that stand up for the every day citizen. And BTW, I DO care about winning! If I don't try to win..the other guy will! life IS all about winning. That is EXACTLY why he have the President that we do today. Because the Democrats/Liberals screamed the loudest! They understood that it is a fight and they attacked to win. And win they did. While you and the rest of the 'Republicans' sat on the couch and held hands. If you want to make a difference...try to win! I'll school you were the last one picked for the kick-ball team.....after all ...show me a content loser...and I will show you a consistent loser!

Hi Tony,
Tony, I'm not sure you understood my post... and perhaps I'm to blame. I was tired and in a sarcastic mood when I wrote it. But I do not believe I was insulting nor do I think I said anything that was untrue.

But, now that I've read your post, I'm left wondering..... do you disagree with my post... or just me personally. You didn't bother to refute anything I said about Oliver North (of course, it's all part of history now... and it's a little hard to deny the role he played in the Iran-Contra Scandal --- after-all, he did eventually admit it after being offered immunity to testify)?

After you enlighten me on that note, if it wouldn't be too much trouble... I'd like to ask how exactly this article is an example of the right wing trying to be "nice guys." Furthermore, are you actually claiming that this article... written by a criminal is both representative of the republican party and is an example of the right-wing trying to be a "nice guy"? Did you miss the part where he tries to draw a parallel between homosexuality and pedophilia?

If that's so, I'd also like to ask you to please stop dragging the good name of my party through the mud. It's comments like yours that make it hard for me to publicly assert that I am, in fact, a republican. But, you see, I'm what I consider to be a true republican... a real conservative... someone who, on an idealistic level, believes in a lassiez-faire government... which is to say a government that is small, stays out of my life as much as possible and does not attempt to legislate morality. The kind of government that only steps in when one persons actions infringe on the rights of another. Of course those are very old and, dare I say, "foundational" ideals (isn't that what "conservatives" used to hold dear?).. what's somewhat funny is... that they're also incredibly liberal.... in many ways more purely liberal than the democratic party could ever hope to be.

In closing, I'd like to ask you and all others like you to step back... and look at yourself and your association with your party objectively (this goes for zealots on both sides of the isle). Neither party has a monopoly on good/evil or anything in between. Both have something to offer, and the great advantage of a two party system is that we, the people, stand to gain a lot from the healthy debates and exchanges of ideas from people who see things a little differently than we do. You will not advance your cause... you will not contribute to this grand nation... if you're more concerned with your "team" winning, than you are with doing what's right for the country. This is not a game. This is our nation. So grow up and start acting like it's more than an after-school football game.

Left wing ahole!
Sheez...Here we go with the left wingers screaming loud and clear!

Why is it that the left wing screams to be heard, but the right wing continues to try and be 'nice guys'?

It's obvious that the person that made the last comment is an idiot. Especially since they left their comments as 'Anonymous'.

Only a loser takes pot-shots and is afraid to leave his real name! ....Well, a loser or a left-winger that is!!!

Missing Credentials for Oliver North
Your description of Oliver North at the end of your article had a glaring omission. You forgot to mention his active role in an illegal operation and his personal involvement with the cover-up including bold-faced lies to congress. Of course, it's ok to disregard the law when you're on the right side of history.... right? Oh. Wait. Maybe it's ok if no one remembers who you are and what you've done? Oh... wait.... maybe it's ok if you barely escaped conviction because all of the witnesses were "tainted" by your own "immunized" testimony. Or... maybe.... well, maybe this guys should stop complaining about people trying to change laws.... and start worrying about people who willfully break them and lie to the people of the united states...even as they claim to serve them....

And, well, maybe we don't need to site anything about Mr North... maybe his own words will be damning enough. Anyone who thinks people in the United States should be denied opportunities because of their political, religious, or sexual beliefs.... is, well, downright unamerican.

It's also worth noting here... that beliefs and actions are two different things.... That while this country was established with the idea that people should be able to freely question their government, their laws, and work to change them.... it does ask that we do so within the law. Mr North, through his words and deeds, seems to think the opposite.
