The Cy-Fair High School girls’ basketball team defeated Cedar Hill, 54-50, in the Class 5A state semifinal on Friday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, and will advance to the state championship game on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The Bobcats will play the winner between Fort Bend Hightower and Northside Jay high schools, who play in the other semifinal tonight.

Cy-Fair senior Chiney Ogwumike led the charge for the Bobcats, compiling 24 points and 25 rebounds in the victory. Junior Cassie Peoples chipped in with 18 points.

Cedar Hill led 23-21 at halftime but Cy-Fair controlled the third quarter and didn’t look back the rest of the way.

“We wanted to slow them down,” Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique said of Cedar Hill. “We gave up a few shots outside but I thought we did a good job of covering them and slowing down their drives. Just like at regionals, our players came through when we needed them to.”

Following the game, Ogwumike explained the “Road to Redemption” t-shirt that she and her teammates wore to state.

“We felt like we had a chip on our shoulder after the loss we had at state. We continue to use that phrase to focus on a state championship,” she said.

Ogwumike also said she doesn’t feel any pressure going into the championship game. “I’m just trying to enjoy this,” she said. “This is my senior year. We’re missing school on a Friday to play basketball here at UT—what could be better? I’m just trying to have fun and enjoy these last minutes as a Cy-Fair Bobcat. I’m all smiles.”
