Danny Nickerson, a 5-year-old Massachusetts boy who is battling cancer, will be turning six on July 25. All he wants for his birthday, he has said, is a box of birthday cards.
Last October, Danny was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Doctors have said that it is inoperable, and is highly resistant to chemotherapy. Since then, Danny has been pulled from his kindergarten class in Foxboro, MA and spends his time with his family and with doctors.
Danny’s family has said that the young boy sometimes gets lonely, and is always overjoyed to get cards with his name on them. He only recently learned to read his name, explained Danny’s mother.
“He can recognize his name now,” Carley Nickerson, Danny’s mother, said. “When he saw his name on the package from magical fairies on Easter, he was so happy.”
She then explained how after Easter, the cards stopped coming.
“He had 33 radiations from November through December last year,” Nickerson said. “We are now getting chemo therapy every two weeks.”
Although doctors have said that less than 10 percent of children diagnosed with Danny’s type of cancer live longer than 18 months, his mother is hopeful that her son will survive.
Since Danny’s birthday is only right around the corner, Nickerson has reached out on Facebook to see if people will send him cards. Danny has said that all he wants on his special day is a big box of cards with his name on them.
“Danny turns 6 in 24 days,” Carley Nickerson posted on July 1 on a Facebook page chronicling her son’s fight against cancer.”He loves receiving mail and he’s always checking the mail box for mail with his name on it. How many birthday cards can we get before his birthday? And give him a month tons of mail! He will love it!”
Danny’s family has set the boy up with his own P.O. box, and he has already received around 40 letters.
“I gave him to key to the P.O. box,” Nickerson said. “He was so excited when he opened it.”
