Medjugorje – Since 1981, in a little town in Bosnia-Herzegovina named Medjugorje, the Sanctified Virgin Mary has been appearing and giving messages to the globe. In Her own words She tells us, “I have come to tell the world that God exists. He’s the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God”. The following is an account of the beginning of the Apparitions ;
On the 24th June 1981, on the hill known as Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) six kids, Ivanka Ivankovic, Mirjana Dragicevic, Vicka Ivankovic, Ivan Dragicevic, Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic saw a pretty young Girl carrying a little kid in her arms. They were frightened at what they saw and did not come closer, even though the Lady beckoned them closer. They knew this Woman was Our Lady.
Next day, the 25th of June 1981, the kids went to the same place where Our Lady had appeared the previous day in hope of seeing Her again. However , the group of kids had modified slightly ; Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic were replaced by 2 others, Marija Pavlovic and Jakov Colo. With the flash of a light, the six children looked up and saw Our Lady, this time without the kid.
When they reached Her, they fell to their knees and started to pray with Our Lady. Before Our Lady left the kids, She said, “God be with you my angels!” There’s been only five days where no apparitions occurred. Medjugorje has been a place of peace, hope and inspiration for so many . The Word of the Almighty is alive in Medjugorje as well as conversion.
In Medjugorje, you may follow the group programme or make a choice to be on your own. Each day (in the language of your choosing) you are welcome to take part the celebration of the Eucharist and attend talks, concerning our Sanctified Mother’s messages with Clergymen, Idealists, nuns and others, visit to Cenacolo at the Hamlet of Bijakovici, where local artisans and artisans give affidavit to Our Lady’s work in their lives.
You’ll visit Bijakovici to see the idealists and their houses, and to meditate at the Blue Cross Mountain. Morning climbs will be scheduled for our groups for Podbrdo Mountain (Apparition hill) and Krizevac Mountain (Cross mountain). Your guide will go with you as you follow the same path up Apparition Hill where the young idealists first encountered Our Woman.
As you climb, you can see the impressed artistry of the bronze plaques picturing each poser of the rosary and touch and pray before the cross that commemorates the spot where Mary appeared to the idealists. In 1933, the villagers constructed a thirty-foot cross at Cross Mountain, to remember the 1900 year anniversary of Christ’s crucifixion.
Each night you are welcome to join the other travellers and the parish community of St. James Church for the recitation of the Rosary, the celebration of the Eucharist, and requests for the sick. On alternative evenings you’ll have the chance to attend the Holy Hour of Devotion of the Sanctified Sacrament or Reverence of the Cross.
Early afternoon talks are commonly held in the green tents or at the rotunda-circular podium stage at the rear of St. James Church. Often they are booked in the evening and at the very last minute, so always listen for the press releases after the morning and evening Mass. Changes to schedules may be related also.
Contingent on his schedule, you can visit Pa Jozo’s parish to attend his holy preaching. When the apparitions began in 1981, Father Jozo was the pastor of St James parish. He’s considered by many to be the high spot of a pilgrimage to Medjugorje.
The place of Our Lady’s first apparitions on the hill of Crnica is generally called Apparition Hill. It is situated a couple of hundred meters above the Bijakovo hamlet of Podbrdo. A steep footpath leads from the houses to the place of the apparitions. Now slightly dilated by the millions of pilgrims who have so far visited the place of the first apparitions, the trail has become observable from as far distant as St. James.
Numerous travellers, many of whom were born and raised on flat asphalt, frequently in unsuitable clothing or even barefoot, and on their knees, climbed over the sharpened stones to the place of Our Lady’s first apparitions.
Half way up the trail is located a massive plain wooden cross. Here’s where on the third day of the apparitions, June twenty-six, 1981, Our Woman appeared to the idealist Marija Pavlovic who, after having had a vision with the others at the usual place that evening, ran down the hill a little before the other idealists.
At this place Marija once more saw Our Woman, now with a unhappy face. Behind her was a large cross and motioning with her hands she claimed, “Peace, peace, peace and only peace! Peace must reign between God and man and also between men!” Today this is a place where travellers stop, remaining in prayer and reflection on the message given by Our Lady, directed to occupy, and the world of today, which is so much in such great need of peace.
