Considering the fact that Thanksgiving Day is all about feasting and partying, health authorities are of the mind that you could be overeating and gaining too much calories in the process. People consume a lot of snacks, cookies, drinks and other varieties of food in the Thanksgiving day celebrations, and some people end up gaining weight that they will have trouble shedding much after.
Some people are of the mindset that indulging yourself for just a day or two shouldn’t make much difference in your calories intake or weight gain potentials, and according to Jamie Pope of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, “I think people would be frowned upon if they were, quote, ‘dieting’ on Thanksgiving. It’s kind of a socially acceptable day to indulge.”
But the Calorie Control Council warns that “The average person may consume enough fat at a holiday meal to equal three sticks of butter,” and to this end, the agency warns that people could potentially consume about 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving instead of the daily recommended rate of 2,000 calories. The agency states that the average American consumes about 3,000 calories per day, and when 1,500 more from drinks and snacks is added on Thanksgiving day, then it is something to be worried about; meanwhile, 45% of the calories is said to come from fat consumed on this day.
The chief science officer of American Council on Exercise, Cedric Bryant agrees with the Calories Control Council on how people feed on any festive day, “If you look at how people tend to have that feast mentality for the meal I think that is very likely.” But Jamie Pope warns people to exercise some restraint in how they eat on Thanksgiving: “You don’t have to go hog wild but also realize this shouldn’t be the impetus for the loss of constraint going forward. You don’t want to go paranoid into the holidays. People just have to be aware.”
Burning off the calories gained through exercise routines might prove pretty difficult after Thanksgiving, and shedding the extra pounds of weight gained might be some trouble; so it is advisable that everyone exercises some self-discipline and control on how they eat during the Thanksgiving day festivities.
