As the American youth continues to draw more towards the consumption of cigarettes, the government is seeking measures to reduce their interests. The rising trend of electronic cigarettes is luring the younger generation of the society to take up smoking as a trending activity. To keep the trend under check, health officials are planning to standardize the packaging of the product. According to a recent study, the trivial move could help reduce smoking among the youth due to a cut in brand attraction.
To make cigarettes less appealing to the youth of America, health officials are considering generalization of cigarettes packaging, irrespective of the brand. The move will also decline the marketing of the product with the aid of attractive packs.
In this context, a study, conducted by Dr. Eric Jacobs, shows that cigarettes smoking causes the death of as many as 60,000 Americans every year. With that figure, the fraction of the population that dies to the unhealthy habit can be estimated to be around 13% per year. Extending the study to a bigger scale led researchers to estimate more than 780,000 deaths across the world.
The head of the HSE National Tobacco, Dave Molloy, said that the health experts have evidence that suggests that the government rules plays a significant role in curbing the birth of new smokers. A significant fall in the number of smokers has been witnessed since 2009 in Ireland. The government of the place had enforced standardization laws for cigarettes packaging.
Nevertheless, although the changes in Ireland are inspiring, the measures still have a long way to go in controlling the use of cigarettes there. At present, Ireland has more than 700,000 smokers. This could mean as many 15 deaths per day due to smoking in Ireland. Whether other countries swill be inspired by the progress of Ireland is still to be seen.
