Nissan recalling over 226,000 cars due to faulty airbag

Nissan has issued a recall on over 226,000 additional vehicles due to a defective airbag that has impacted a number of car manufacturers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan North America Inc. is recalling certain lines of Infiniti, Maxima, Pathfinder and Sentra vehicles that were made between the years 2002 and 2004.

Already, the faulty airbags, which were made by Japanese supplier Takata Corp., has forced the recall of millions of cars around the world. Car manufacturers, including Honda, BMW, Ford, Toyota, and Chrysler have all been affected.

The airbag defect affects the passenger side airbag. The problem is with the inflators. They can cause the airbags to splinter and break, which could cause serious injuries to people in the car.

Brian Brockman, a representative from Nissan, has said that he isn’t aware of any injuries caused by the airbag. Nissan has already recalled over 400,000 cars due to this issue, which brings the total number of recalled cars to 664,628.

This latest Nissan recall, which will be impacting a total of 226,326 cars, will begin on August 11, noted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The faulty inflators will be replaced, free of charge, by Nissan, the company has said. This will affect both airbags that were originally installed in the cars, as well as faulty airbags that are replacements.

The National High Traffic Safety Administration has explained that any vehicle owners impacted by this recall with be notified. However, owners can also call Nissan Customer Service directly at 1-800-647-7261.
