The journal Nature recently published an article which says that scientists have found a new way of developing antibiotics. The new powerful antibiotics are aimed at infections that cannot be cured with the help of current drugs or at replacing those drugs that are no longer effective.
The discovery of a new method of producing antibiotics seems promising in fighting with the increasing infections that cannot be treated easily. Scientists expect to solve an urgent global problem with this new antibiotic, named teixobactin.
The new method consists of extracting drugs from bacteria that grow on dirt. It has helped discover a powerful new antibiotic which has the potential to cure severe infections with no side effects. Teixobactin has already been tested on mice and has proved very effective.
Researchers have found that the drug works in an effective manner such that it is likely to prohibit the occurrence of the bacteria again. They also said that the new method devised can lead to the finding of a host of natural compounds that could fight infections, as well as cancer. These are molecules that were beyond the reach of scientists because they were unable to cultivate the microbes in the lab.
Teixobactin, although proved effective in mice, has not yet been tested in human beings. Hence, its efficacy or safety on humans is still unknown. In this context, the Director and senior author of the Antimicrobial discovery Center at Northeastern University in Boston, Kim Lewis commented that human tests would be initiated after at least two years. In addition, he said that the studies will last for several more years after being started. Even after their efficacy is proved, they might need some more years to be launched in the market and made available to the people. He added that the new drugs would not be available to oral use but would need to be injected.
