A new research conducted by scientists from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, has indicated that timing is almost everything with preventing or reversing obesity. The researchers established that restricting the time you eat to a particular 8-12 hour window might be all you need to losing weight and preventing diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterols.

“These days, most of the advice is, ‘You have to change nutrition, you have to eat a healthy diet. But many people don’t have access to healthy diets. So the question is, without access to a healthy diet, can they still practice time-restricted feeding and reap some benefit?” said Satchidananda Panda, an associate professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

To fully drive home their research, Panda and other associates classified 400 mice into two groups of normal weight and obese. They were then feed with a diet over varying lengths of time. The first group of mice was found to be thinner and healthier after being fed with high-fat diet within 12-hour periods, but the other group was not as leaner or healthier because they were allowed to eat high-fat diet anytime they chose and without restrictions. High-sugar diets and high-fruit diets had the same results with high-fat diets in both groups of lab mice.

According to Amandine Caix, a postdoctoral researcher and lead study author, “The fact that it worked no matter what the diet, and the fact that it worked over the weekend and weekdays, was a very nice surprise. This de-emphasizes caloric intake, hence making it an attractive and easily adoptable lifestyle modification.”

Overall, time-restricted feeding can be highly effective for individuals wishing to lose some pounds of weight or prevent/reverse obesity; it is a behavioral intervention process that teaches self-control where snacking and food are concerned, and with long-term health benefits for all overweight persons and those that look forward to checking their weight gain.
